Flagged Messages

As Overgrad introduces AI powered tools to the student and educator experience, student safety and transparency is important to us. Here’s what you can expect:

• Guardrails on every conversation. All of our AI chat experiences are tightly scoped to its intended purpose; it isn’t a general-purpose chatbot. 

• Automatic safety flagging. If a student's language raises a safety concern, our system alerts the counselor or administrator assigned to that student by email.

• Educator judgment is essential. No monitoring system is foolproof. Technology can support safety, but it cannot replace educator judgment and school-based protocols. Your review of flagged alerts and your relationship with the student is critical to make the system work.

• Student data is protected. Overgrad does not use student data and information gathered by Trek to train AI.

Flagged Message Detection & Notification

As students engage in AI chat experiences, Trek will flag any messages students that indicate harassment, harm to self, hate, sexual content, or violence. For students, Trek will redirect the conversation to the relevant topic and encourage the student to talk to a trusted adult. For educators, it will flag the message for review.

• Alert recipients: The student’s assigned counselor on Overgrad (or all counselors at the school if none are assigned) and the school account manager will receive an email notification with the flagged message alert within a few minutes.

• Reviewing message: Educators can view the flagged messages by following the prompt in the email or from the navigation menu, clicking on Communication, then Flagged Messages. Click on the flagged message to read the message transcript and the red flagged messages.

Marking Addressed Messages

To mark the flagged message as addressed:

1. Go to the list of Flagged Messages

2. Click the three-dot menu icon on the right and click “Mark as Addressed”

3. Document how the message was addressed in the notes, then click “Mark as Addressed” to save. This note is only visible to educators.

Provide Moderation Feedback

Your feedback on an appropriately or inappropriately flagged message helps us strengthen our monitoring! 

1. Go to the list of Flagged Messages

2. Click the three-dot menu icon on the right and click “Provide Moderation Feedback”

3. Follow the prompts to share feedback, then click “Submit Feedback” to save.
